THE CONCRETE ROUNDABOUT (TCR)

I'm old school, ? Ad an atheist. So when it comes to watching the football, I’m there for the match, have a craic , the goals and shouting and screaming not all the extra bits that come with aligning ourselves with movements or religions.
Peronally , Armistice Day., I would go with , That said, I remember going to the stadium a few years back, and we did the silence and we included the silence to be for the Leicester chairman who terribly died in the helicopter . And I did stand there thinking, how’s this all been lumped in together?
The kneeling, the praying, the random applause for things I can’t keep up with just doesn’t do it for me, if I’m honest.
Celebrating the life of a true fan or someone connected to the club somehow? 100% , Just maybe not in a way that feels forced or out of place?
In my head, football’s meant to be a community. Doesn’t matter who you are or what you believe, if you love football, you’re in the family. That’s what makes it great.
Only reason I’m saying this is because I’ve noticed lately we’re suddenly giving a nod to all sorts of religious festivals – Passover, Ramadan, Eid. Again, no issue with anyone who celebrates , absolutely not . But today’s Good Friday, which is a big thing for Christians, and, nothing?
Feels like we’re trying to please everyone and will end up in a mix , like , wheres it start and stop? My take? do nothing, and that way no one’s left out. Or, if you're gonna do something, then do everything , but it is a bigggg rabbit hole imo

I would say that watching the Dons this year has been a season-long nod to Christianity - we are all in Purgatory!

What other religious days do football celebrate? And surely Monday is more appropriate. I'm up to finding Easter eggs though.

Easter Monday isn’t really a thing, it’s the day after the thing.

I'd say it was more related to Buddhism - we've all created bad karma in our previous existence and are suffering because of that in this one.

Putting aside all the unnecessary bollocks about religion, there is a point to be found in there (somewhere).

It does seem like there's a minute's silence or applause in almost every game now, and I think it cheapens occasions when it's actually important.

Remembrance Sunday is an exception though, and I hate the way that football has effectively commercialised it. It seems to have been turned into a competitive virtue-signalling sport of 'we have the biggest display, we have more poppies falling on our screen, we care more than you'. Whatever happened to quiet, dignified respect?

It isn't just football that's done that.

Back in my day (zzzzz) Remembrance was a completely non-commercial event beyond the sale of paper poppies (RBL now sells all sorts of poppy tat). School held one event - a silence - and that was that. I was in the cadets and our Warrant Officer was so tight he used to iron his poppy and reuse it year after year. Not sure that type of character exists any more!
