To sneak in 6 surnames of presidents (including Pierce and Taylor) that could all be first names and that went undetected wasn't easy.
Hi Bertie,
Although I don't play this thread, I do read and enjoy the thread as a 'viewer'. :D
Wrt US presidents, it's puzzled me why we in the UK seem to frequently have questions on quizzes (& quiz shows on TV), about old / dead US presidents, rather than old / dead prime ministers.
I honestly wouldn't have a clue about who was US president before JFK.
To be fair, I also wouldn't be sure about who was prime minister before Wilson either.
While as a UK citizen I might be expected to know a bit more about who our former old / dead prime ministers were (and shame on me for not doing so), I'm not sure why quiz question masters over here expect us to know as much (or little) about old / dead US presidents over there?
Is it because of US culture & hollywood that we're almost expected to know more about old / dead US presidents, than old / dead prime minsters?
As I said, I'd be crap on either, but why don't we appear to ask ourselves about old / dead prime ministers more often than old / dead US presidents, or is it just me?
Apologies for the interruption, but genuinely interested to hear your thoughts.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home (pronounced Hulme) was before Wilson. 8-)

It's a good question though. Maybe because POTUS is such a powerful role (or has been for the last Century)? Maybe because they serve in neatly delineated four year terms and can then define various eras? No, I'm not convincing myself with those reasons but it's true that UK quizzes feature presidents a lot - generally the early, post-Revolutionary period and then the post-Lincoln ones (Van Buren and Polk and those guys rarely get included). UK PMs do feature in quizzes but generally it's 20th Century onward and, especially, post-War.

So, instead, there's types of preparing potatoes? - Chip, Wedge, Mash, Baked, Roast?

Gratin and Lyonnaise has to be potato related so add Mash and Baked

Bertie got Chip, Wedge, Eagle, Fore - golfing terms. :D

He also got Ridicule, Rib, Roast, Mock - synonyms for tease. :D

DD got Lyonnaise, Baked, Gratin, Mash - ways of preparing or serving potatoes. :D

So the correct final group is Naked, Evil, Beady, Smokey - can be followed by the word eye.

I said it was easy.

Interesting point you raise; I could name without thinking really 35 of the presidents I reckon.

Prime Ministers- about 6. I was at a quiz two weeks ago and one of the questions was who was the youngest PM. I genuinely had never heard of the answer.

I could tell you the when the first President was 1789. Not even a scooby when our first PM was...

Thanks for the replies folks - glad it's not just me that thinks it's an interesting question.
Iirc, Steelback has US connections, but 35 presidents is impressive knowledge! :o
Bertie's thoughts on US Presidents vs. our Monarchs/Prime Ministers makes a lot of sense to me, but I couldn't tell you who was monarch here before Victoria either.

You've never heard of William Pitt the Younger? Have you never watched Blackadder?
