Perhaps the world’s greatest ever director David Lynch has sadly died at 78.

To make one classic movie would be a remarkable achievement, but to continually fire out one classic after another… Eraserhead, Wild At Heart (one of The Current Mrs Gers favourites) Blue Velvet, and not forgetting the utter masterpiece that is Twin Peaks. I love his stuff, apart from Dune, which in all honesty is shit. In fact he turned down an opportunity to direct The Return On The Jedi in order to have a go at Herbert’ masterpiece. God alone only knows how the Star Wars franchise would have developed if he actually had a go.

He was one of those things that I actually love, a true polymath. Made films, painted, made music, and a host of other things. I loved him.

I’ve just remembered one time when I was working near Northampton. There were three plasterers from Sheffield if I recall correctly. One Monday the three of them came in with the Wild At Heart logo tattooed on their upper arms. Apparently the movie was a massive hit up there. Funny the way your brain works sometimes.

If I can find Eraserhead online this weekend I’m definitely watching it.

Couldn’t find it, but started rewatching Twin Peaks instead, the hour and a half pilot episode. Obviously haven’t watched it for 35 years, and to be honest, knowing what’s coming you wonder what everyone thought they were getting. It’s basically a who done it crime thing, albeit with some hint of the strangeness. However, still amazing telly.

I just watched the Sky Arts “Directors” show about him (made before he died). I loved Twin Peaks series 1 but this show explained why series 2 fell away badly; apparently Lynch was only hands on on a few episodes as he was away making a film. It was left for some jobbing directors to try and guess what was going on in Lynch’s head. Good luck with that!
