Cases of Omicron have rocketed. Especially amongst the young in London (my lad shares a flat with two young ladies - they have both caught it - he headed back to MK before that was confirmed and is doing LFTs every day). Whitty (who, unlike most it seems, I think is doing a good job in a bad situation - imagine having Boris pressing you constantly to be more positive) says that we'll reach a huge peak but then quickly drop back. The data from SA seems to indicate a variant that is hugely easier to catch but is a little less dangerous.

Aside from the rocketing numbers catching it, hospitalizations are still fairly flat (I know there are lags but it's still a positive trend). Deaths are still, slowly, declining. Of those going to hospital, or dying, very roughly 75% are not vaccinated. So fuck 'em (apart from the very unfortunate few who cannot be vaccinated).

With that as the background, tomorrow I'm off to London for a boozy Christmas lunch with former colleagues, that has been an annual event (except for last year) for 25 years. We're all between 50 and 66 but all fully jabbed and we'll all do a LFT before we set off. Reckless or a balanced risk? You'll all have your own take on that but I'll just say this: imagine, for the last 100 years, the nightly news broadcasts had reported the numbers catching flu, the numbers going to hospital and the numbers dying. That might (might) have made us all a little less panicky about what's currently happening.

As I've said before, it's not the infection rate that ultimately matters, it's the rate of bad outcomes (serious illness or death).

I’ve just read that one quarter of EFL players have not had a single jab.

Wow.

Wow.

Just been a report on The Today Program about that very thing. Only interested in The Premiership, but exactly the same numbers. Fucking outrageous really.

Still, could be worse. We could be living in Wales.

Apparently the main problem being that fully vaccinated players that come into contact with a someone who's tested positive don't need to isolate, just do daily lateral flow tests. Whereas those that aren't do. Meaning that they have to self isolate for ten days.

As I understand it, 75% of those in hospital haven't been vaccinated.
Had they been vaccinated, that figure would be a fraction of that.
The simple answer, as we've always known, is to get vaccinated.
Am I missing something?

EDIT: Or as my dad pointed out, don't go to hospital, everyone's got Covid there

I'll say one positive thing about this variant. It's making driving around town an absolute pleasure today. Central London is like a ghost town.

Every cloud and all that...

If by '75%', you mean '43%', then yes, you're absolutely right.

See table 9 of the latest official UK Health Security Agency stats here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1041593/Vaccine-surveillance-report-week-50.pdf

Doesn't bode well for your maths degree, does it?

How would reading that the figure was 75% a few days ago but is now 43% be any indication that it would affect my ability to achieve a maths degree?
Do you imagine that I looked at a news agency that gave me the required figures and then I had to work it out for myself?
What an odd thing to suggest
