Postal orders, usually tucked into birthday cards sent by aged aunts.

Your mum collecting Green Shield Stamps with her shopping, sticking them in a book and eventually using them to buy a toaster from a proto-Argos shop.

Your mum being all experimental by buying, "cooking" and serving up a Vesta curry, usually full of freeze-dried apple and raisins.
