Players are entitled to statutory annual leave if they are employees. That is what happens between the end of the season and beginning of preseason.

No, they often do not. My wife has a mandatory contractual requirement to take two weeks off over Christmas and New Year, when the business closes down. And of course, there is no absolute entitlement to take leave whenever you like. Timing of statutory annual leave is ultimately at the discretion of the employer and they can refuse your request.

Footballers' annual leave is in the summer.
