A giant of a man in every respect. As you know, most of the music I like is somewhat of an acquired taste, but you'd go a long way to beat him.
The Scottish filmmaker Grant McPhee tells a wonderful story of working on a film that Kristofferson was in, and being invited to a wrap party. Old Kris and his band were the turn as it were. McPhee is stood around wondering why old Kris is playing a load of covers without realising that he was both an established singer, and indeed wrote all of the songs. And I think that'll be his legacy. Most know him as an actor without knowing that as a songwriter he was unparalleled.
If you'd like to remember him, then do it this way. When Sinead O'Connor was being booed after tearing up a picture of the pope, he was the only one who showed her any support, which resulted in a lifelong friendship. When asked to get her off stage at a Dylan show in Madison Square Garden, he told the promoter to fuck off, walked on stage, gave her a big hug saying "Don't let the bastards get you down".
