Not sure about that. Lots of PL discards end up having unremarkable careers. They all have very little or no football league experience.

Whereas a proven non-league goalscorer or creative mid that has been playing week in week out for a few seasons has the experience of more competitive, physical football as well as the ability to score goals which may or may not translate to performing the same at a higher level.

I'd much rather take a gamble on a 20+ goal per season non-league striker than an inexperienced, untested PL academy cast off, of which there are many.

Ben Reeves was an exception. The vast majority aren't as good as him.

Fair enough - but many have made the point that we are trying to play a passing game with players not technically good enough. We're not going to improve that by looking at the lower leagues.

I agree the club should focus more on permanently signed players full stop rather than relying on loanees. Not a single long term player signed this window.

Think the club really neglect scouting the lower leagues. Peterborough have done very well with a few of their non-league signings (or at least players that have spent most of their career so far in non-league).

Absolutely this. Can't understand why we overlook the lower leagues.
Well scouted players from that level seem to fall into PW's philosophy: young, hungry and cheap. And, if developed well, can be sold on for a profit.

Yes, I agree that players who come though PL academies are generally better technically. But there are some technical players in non-league if they are searched for: off the top of my head, Peterborough have signed George Boyd, Marcus Maddison and Erhun Oztumer from non-league and they are all technically gifted attacking players.
Also, we want a bit of balance in our squad and so even if we missed out on technical players from non-league, we could get those from the PL academies and sign a bit of physicality and lower league know-how from non-league.
But with a lot of foreign youngsters coming into PL academies, then there are more English youngsters dropping down the levels and the standard of youngsters having to drop down to non-league has increased in recent years.
So, if we scout well, there's more Boyd's and Oztumer's out there to be picked up.

it seems to me that most of peterborough's best signings have been standout league two and occasionally conference players. those players are not exactly secrets and are not easy or cheap to sign.

it's also easier for a team with a wealthy owner to take risks - e.g. fee of up to £500,000 on a 20-year-old maddison with supposed attitude problems. that would be most of our budget gone on a roll of the dice.

The same chairman is quoted as saying he would never pay what we are paying Gilbey a week......

I don't believe it does stop with Pete, he has bought the players the managers have asked; except for Grigg and he has held up his hands on that one.

Maynard - he clearly wasn't the same player after his injury and the club didn't pick up on that;
Gallagher - a loan player, who had personal issues and a lack of experience showed in the Championship;
Church - as much as Alby likes him. a workhorse with a poor goals record;
Agard - Hot & cold, for our record signing his first touch is poor;
Sow - Yet to do anything meaningful and looks out of his depth, but hasn't has the service required;
McDonald - bought due to Robbos liking of small forwards, should have got Revell;
Hitchcock - the less said the better;
Revell - We finally got Revell and he looked good, but we allowed the Cobblers to get him;
Lowe - did well after a shaky start getting used to one up front and left as soon as he could.

Even with Dan's possession football I believe we either need a striker like Revell or a fast player like Sam, but whoever we get in the future the profile and recruitment needs to be better and we need to provide them with better service ans more clear cut chances.

Hold on when did I ever say I liked Simon Church? :lol:

I don't know where that came from. I thought you were an admirer of the Welsh wonder. :D - Wonder is how he ever got to the level he did, including the Welsh team.

Very true, however if the other players are not chipping in with goals then the team has a serious problem.

Agard who the club paid a substantial fee for and probably a large wage is a good example of the poor player recruitment within the club. Certainly when you look at his first touch and ball control, he really does not fit the Robinson/DM style.

I know it's daft but I always thought he needs wider boots with more padding. He only has to touch the ball and it's off like a pinball machine.

YEAH. HE NEEDS MORE MOVEMENT. I MEAN, THERE HAS TO BE A TWIST. ;)

These are the new football boots I'm considering patenting.

That'd be me. But I'm flattered you think of my opinions highly enough to be that of Alby's.

Back to the Op though, I wonder if someone with more free time on there hands can tell the the number of League One teams in each of the last few seasons that has had a striker scoring 20+ goals. I don't think it'll be that many personally. Unless we get really lucky, and particularly with the 4-2-3-1 system, it's going to require a lot of players pitching in to get goals, we can't be relying on one person to bail us out.
