Surely the logical conclusion is that if, as you say, the defence is weak we need a better goalkeeper. I think Nicholls is making too many mistakes and has cost us more points than he has saved.

He is definitely not playing as well as he was when he took over from Martin.

He's the keeper until the end of the season so I go for the improve option.

Having a Wootton/EEL combination in front of a young ‘keeper tends to have an effect on his confidence.

For what it’s worth I think his handling is below average, and his recovery from initial saves isn’t as sharp as it should be for a young agile ‘keeper. DM was far superior on both counts.

The other thing that gets me, but I’m not sure how easy it is to coach out of him, is his propensity to make a good stop and put the ball back into the middle of the six yard box rather than wide. Great ‘keepers have the presence of mind to not only make the stop but put it in the area of least danger. i.e. wide of goal.

Nichols let one goal in yesterday, Martin let two in. Case closed, take ‘em away boys.

He seems to parry it in front of him a lot or spill shots. He’s made good saves greatness but few and far between. Jury is still out on him and I’m not seeing where the big fuss is from some fans regarding his performances

We also need to remember we are league 1 team. Quality keepers are hard to come by and if he was as good as some expect he wouldn't be with us in the first place.
He is a decent keeper and has saved our skin many times already this season. I seem to recall he was MOTM a few times at the beginning of the season. He is good in the air and makes some very decent saves from long distance. He makes some mistakes but what more do you want from a league 1 keeper?

Indeed. Having said that, over the years I've always found the standard of keepers at League 1 level pretty good. It's rare to get a keeper who has an absolutely nightmare - though it does happen occasionally.

Adolpho Baines rather springs to mind.

I think he’s a decent league 1 keeper, he has faults like most others at this level, but the real fear factor for him has to be having the lumbering EEL in his sight
