As an apprentice, back in the gloomy 70's, one of the guys I used to work with invented something which he called a 'girder'. Which was basically vodka and Irn Brew.

When I was in my second or third year of my apprenticeship, which would have been late '79, I worked with another guy who's lunch box contained two cans of 'heavy'. Nothing else. Just two tins of beer.
Times were different back then.
My first apprentice training course (at Bletchley Park as it happens), we all rock up aged 16 and one of our cohort opens his suitcase to show it contained 2 T shirts and 1 bottle of vodka. And nothing else. As you say, different times.
