THE CONCRETE ROUNDABOUT (TCR)

I am an absolutely massive Trekkie. In fact, if I ever get accepted on Mastermind, my specialist subject would be the original series (1966, 79 episodes). If I got through to the second round, The Archers, third The Velvet Underground. But anyway.

I have this vivid memory of being in a tailors in Glasgow one Saturday afternoon in the sixties. It was dark, so it must've been winter. Rangers must've been playing away as we weren't at football. My dad was trying on either a suit jacket or a coat, my memory isn't that good, and I was frantic as I thought we wouldn't be back in time for Star Trek. That's how much I love it.

It's with immense sadness that for me personally that I've just found that Nichelle Nichols has passed away. An icon of the black power movement, and the first person to share an interracial kiss on screen along with William Shatner obviously. She was fantastic as Lieutenant Uhura. Sexy as fuck, and a brilliant actor to boot.

I'll leave you with this, most possibly apocryphal story. She was so pissed off with the way she was treated by the producers of Trek that she was ready to quit. She was at some function somewhere or other when she feels a tap on her shoulder. Turns around and is confronted by none other that Dr King. Who tells her that she mustn't leave as she's leading the fight for black emancipation. If she's remembered for nothing else, that's some legacy right there.

Sorry for the derail. Back on topic; she was an amazing statement about the future, when TV was so white bread. The only black people I saw on TV before her were musicians (Motown, Aretha etc). She was as cool as fuck too.

Sat here watching Star Trek: Into Darkness on tv, the original inspired so many spin offs on TV and film, she was a trailblazer for black people and hot as hell, gutted she has passed
