Southstander started a thread with this theme, which vanished in The Great TCR Implosion.

I'm reviving it to share a pod I've been listening to and enjoying:

"A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs" by Andrew Hickey. I think it dates from about 2018 and there are currently 129 episodes to catch up on, each about 30 minutes long.

My experience so far is that it's an incredibly detailed and wide ranging exploration of the musical genres that led to the development of rock and roll, going back to the 30's and sometimes earlier. I'm up to episode 15 and it's only just got up to the very early 50s!

It's a great listen if you're a music nerd - very broad and complete, documenting the ways musicians and genres influenced and cross-fertilised one another. Hickey also explains, in simple terms, some of the music theory (eg what exactly is a back beat?). If you're like me, you'll find Hickey's voice a chore (a deep and very sloooow scouse accent) but it's worth getting past that as his content is excellent.

Recommended. 8/10 on the Soze-ometer.

I'll give you a list of the ones I still listen to on a regular basis.

Bigmouth. An arts/culture pod.

Word In Your Ear. Music centric. Hosted by David Hepworth and Mark Ellen.

Rockonteurs. Now. When this started it was pretension personified. It's changed. It's absolutely a must listen for me now. It's still Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt, but they now let the stellar guests talk for themselves. You may have a preconception of what, for example, Joe Elliott from Def Leppard is like. You'd be wrong. He was an outstanding guest. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Synthetic Dreams. It's an electronic music pod. I don't listen on a regular basis, as the host is an enthusiastic amateur. It's very nerdy. He interviews producers and musicians from that genre. You'd have to absolutely love a Fairlight to listen to this.

Heart And Hand. Rangers. Interesting point on this. It's exactly 12yrs ago today since this started. They're now media partners of the Glasgow giants, and have a presence within Ibrox. Which shows how media is gradually changing.

The Guardian Football Weekly. Does what it says on the tin.

The MK1 Podcast. The young guys who won fan of the year last season.

I'll highly recommend Welcome To Your Fantasy. It's the history of The Chippendales male strippers. It's not what you think. A true crime pod, with murder, double crossing, back stabbing the whole nine yards. It's very, very good.

The best pod I've ever listened to is obviously  S-Town. This is an astonishing piece of work. It's the best thing I've ever listened to. It really is that good.

Don't really listen to podcasts that much myself, but my ex used to always put them on, and I'd quite enjoy "More or Less". It's a BBC one that takes headlines and news articles fro the previous week or so, and does some analysis on the numbers quoted, to contextualise things,or add/remove confidence in the numbers. Statistically rigorous, but also at a very accessible level. Would thoroughly recommend.

A few I have listened to recently;

The Northern Bank Job - BBC Radio 4. Recounts the the tale of what was at the time the biggest bank heist in British and Irish criminal history. Very well put together.

West Cork - A podcast about the unsolved murder of French women Sophie Toscan du Plantier in rural Ireland. Think there is a Netflix show about it now?

Tunnel 29 - Helena Merriman tells the extraordinary true story of a man who dug a tunnel right under the feet of Berlin Wall to help friends, family and strangers escape.

Evil Genius - can never decide if I like this one or hate it  Russell Kane and a panel of guest comedians discuss famous figures before voting on whether they believe them to be a Genius or just Evil. Pretty silly but some episodes can be quite interesting as you learn some of the lesser known facts about people like Einstein, Elvis and Alfred Hitchcock. In equal measure some episodes are boring and at times Russell Kane can be incredibly annoying. I tend to only listen to episodes were the person in question peaks my interest. Be warned though, sometimes hearing how awful your hero is can suck. (Looking at you George Best  )

13 Minutes to The Moon is the best podcast I've ever listened to, and well worth a listen if you'd like to appreciate the full details behind the Apollo 11 & Apollo 13 missions.

Never Strays Far - (with David Millar & Ned Boulting) is also worth a listen if you're into random cycling-related thoughtfulness.
