I got this idea whilst watching The Open highlights last night, when they included a tribute to Peter Alliss.

From any field, sport or not, which voices/persona combos do you (or did you) love?

My three have all sadly passed: Alliss, obvs, John Peel, Brian Johnston. God, they were all awesome.

I can't get enough of Rob Key's intonation. A niche interest, I admit. It does go well with his grumpiness.

I'd add Benaud and Tony Greig to that list- Greig may not be the most well-recognised, but whenever you watch any highlights reel you'll more than likely hear "what an absolute ripper- take a bow!"

Absolutely Murray Walker.

I wouldn't have such an interest in motorsport, or made a career out of it, if it wasn't for him.

Bill McLaren, the voice of Rugby Union, I could listen to him all day - such authority! (I'm also tempted to say Eddie Waring, another sound from Saturday afternoon TV)

Tony Blackburn - still going strong, Sounds of the Sixties is a must every week on the BBC Sounds App, I remember seeing him at the Radio One roadshow in Bude during the mid seventies - same humour and enthusiasm, not dimmed a bit

Good old Motty, I know he was a bit of a Marmite choice but I always loved his commentary

:D

Eddie Butler deserves an honourable mention. If ever a voice was made for sporting montages, it was his!

"Whispering" Ted Lowe, the voice of snooker. The black ball final between Taylor and Davis was already tense, with the tension built even more by his commentary.

There have been some good commentators in cricket too. Benaud is the obvious one, and I loved his partnership with Geoff Boycott.

David Lloyd (Bumble) is brilliant too, seeming to know just the right moments to have a laugh with the crowd or at his fellow commentators expense (usually Nasser Hussain, who is actually a decent commentator himself), when to be serious and provide the insightful cricketing knowledge and analysis that the viewer wants, and when to keep your mouth shut and let the action speak for itself rather than talking for the sake of it - it was no surprise when reading one of his books to find that he learnt from working with Richie Benaud, and observed Richie in a half hour commentary stint only speak one line, but the best line of the day
