It’s dreadful, a world iconic building seemingly being totally destroyed, firefighters in Paris saying they aren’t sure that the building can be saved, as the fire is so severe. Such a sad sight to witness

I saw that- it's horrible but i suppose we have to actually think we are alive during something that will go down in history. In 400 years time people will be saying "The Notre Dame fire", a bit like "The Crystal Palace Fire" but on a far larger scale.
I'm just glad I got to see it.

It can be rebuilt.

Quick google search on the Cloth Hall rebuild.

Seems to be similar to the Windsor Castle fire in terms of renovations were going on, hopefully the firefighter who was hurt makes a full recovery - as wonderful as buildings are they are replaceable a father/son/husband/brother is not.

An awful lot of fires are caused during renovation or restoration works. We only hear about the well known ones. IE York, Ely, Windsor, Cutty Sark etc.

Not the more usual ones like the time my firm were working overnight between shifts at British Steel's Tube Works. Got a call about 1AM from our site foreman who announced that they had got a 'wee' fire. Call the fire brigade says I. I have, he said, the local brigade are here and the Liverpool brigade is on it's way.

That 'wee' fire destroyed half the blooming factory.

Apparently it's not as bad as first feared. The medieval roof has totally gone, as has the spire. However the spire was a 19th century addition. I'm pretty sure that the rose windows have been saved, and both bell towers are relatively intact.
The fire service risked their lives in order to save the art works. Climbing to the top of the aforementioned bell towers so as to minimise damage by water. Which, according to an architect on the wireless, causes more damage than fire. He also made a good point regarding the fire. Its not the first one they've had there. Far from it. So his take was it's just another step in the evolution of the building.

Along with many cathedrals and churches throughout the country the bells in the small village of Wingrave will be rung half muffled on Maundy Thursday in solidarity with the many friends the village has with France through our twinning with a Normandy village.

I had a hunch back the other day that might be the case....
