Loved alan smithhere and throughout his caree right back to his early days at leeds. Him and chadders are 2 of my favourites to come from having played at the very top with united

I recall he could hang in the air forever, brilliant header of the ball. Lived in Woburn if I recall during his time here

Great player earlier in his career. And no questioning his intent and desire - he came here for the right reasons. All that is to his credit. But his actual contribution versus what we hoped... I heard he was joining us over lunch when I moved my eldest lad into uni. He told me Smith was joining us. I was buzzing. But he was never a match winner with us. But neither was he a Didi/Flo et al type of "last payday" journeyman and that's also to his credit. Sadly, he just wasn't someone who made a major difference.

I have a lovely pic of my mum with Alan Smith. She always said he was “the most expensive smelling man she’d ever known”

To be fair, she was comparing him to you and your dad, so the benchmark wasn't high. :D

Compared to my brother, we’re perfumed dandy’s

Apart from the winner against Blades

Agree though, he never quite “ran the show” as many assumed he would, but there were some very good technical players around him who’d had a couple of years in Robbo’s system to do the creative stuff.

He didn't make the difference in the sense of "controlling the game" or "winning it on his own" but you could almost always tell when he came on the influence he had on the opposing team. Pinged a decent ball and did the rough stuff well which freed others up to do the good things better.

His first spell with us on loan from Newcastle I thought he was great. Didn't set the world alight for the next two years but he came in and made an impact in more ways than just 'he's here to score goals' which, he wasn't.
