I have a lovely pic of my mum with Alan Smith. She always said he was “the most expensive smelling man she’d ever known”

To be fair, she was comparing him to you and your dad, so the benchmark wasn't high. :D

Can't remember who it was against, but there was the great game he ended up needing to play centre-back in. The VFTOS was full of people saying he thought he was Beckenbauer, but I seem to rememebr him actually being decent and having some great passes from deep.

I liked the guy: better than Jimmy Bullard - another 'legend'.

Can add better than Flo, Hamann, Upson, Wickham and Johnson in fact of the ex-prem players we have signed he ranks quite highly

I loved him. The impact he had second half of the season 11/12 was superb. He never really played as a striker either, so goal record was understandably low. He did what he was good at, being a nuisance and adding grit to a side that lacked it.

I thought, and still do think that every team needs a shithouse bukky and that was Smith. Didn't have a chip on his shoulder, didn't think he deserved better. Got on with it and accepted his role with grace and did it superbly.

I liked him. Though he obviously wasn't the player he had been in previous years before coming to us, he was one of the few ageing, loaded, good PL career players who I think genuinely cared about playing for us, rather than having one last alright pay day without needing to bother to make much of an effort.

Very much this.

And that celebration vs Sheff Utd was iconic

I remember a free kick or corner, he peeled around the box towards the far post - watching the flight of the ball all the way - and with a dive, headed the ball just inside the far post. Pure class.

He may have been past his prime, but how many strikers have we had with that much quality? I can’t think of any.

Pretty sure that was against Sheffield United.

Thanks for the suggestion. It was more spectacular than the SU goal. I did a quick trawl of YouTube but couldn’t find it.

Alan - if you’re checking the forum - do us a favour and remind us! ;)
