Apparently Leeds are not renewing his contract which expires in the summer, whether he would sign for us on a permanent might depend on what league we end up in next season, he might agree to a one year deal in league 1, but he’s well capable of playing a higher level.
The Payne/Bate combo in midfield is a joy to watch, two technically gifted players, pint sized pocket rockets who can make a team tick
Dream scenario (well double dream really
) is that we get promoted and he’s prepared to sign a deal with us with a similar release clause and terms as Matt O’Riley that rewards us in the short term, but more importantly down the line. For the reasons I mentioned above I don’t think he’d ever reach the sort of figures being touted for O’Riley currently but once he adds a bit more goal involvement to his game*, then you just never know.
*-harsh, but he’s not been as involved in our goals as he possibly should be due to the deep lying role and maybe we haven’t “showcased” that side of his game as much as we should?
