Didn't Neilson suggest the introduction of the u23s/reserve team or whatever it is? That is surely a positive.

No, that was always going to happen*. KR had been lobbying for it for years. Eventually he got it as far as having an u21’s squad that would play ad hoc fixtures (rather than enter a league) last season under Mike Dove. They never really played as many games as hoped and that led to the entry to the Central League for this season. RN was the beneficiary rather than the Catalyst for that change.

*-the only caveat being that Robbie Neilson could feasibly have said “no, I’m going to trim the number of academy kids graduating and sign an extra first team player or two”.

The Posh game will forever be up there with my top memories. In some ways even more so than Man U, because I expected a routing against Posh with 11 men and even more so with 10 and then 9. Still bringing shivers just remembering.

When we look back on the Neilson era in say 5 years I wonder if we will also credit him with a clearout of the old guard who had become too comfortable under KR.

The only one I think was a big mistake to let go was Potter, he would have brought the steadying hand to the youngsters. I remember Lewie saying when he was being interviewed about his new contract at the beginning of the season, that the team would miss Potter the most because he was the arm round the shoulder guy to boost players up again when Lewie had been stern with them.

PS - that does assume that Potter would not have also been sidelined.

This seems right to me. Getting rid of the old guard was never going to be make him popular, but that's clearly what Pete brought him in to do, and it's what had to be done. Certainly it wasn't perfect, but Robbie was willing to get his hands dirty so that his successor has a younger, fresher squad, and we should be tankful for that.

Also he beat the Posh with 9 men, set up the under 23s, saved us from near certain relegation, won at home, won at AFC and signed O'Keefe who scored with his arse.
