this is a complete straw man though. no one advocating a more possession-oriented approach doesn’t want to see the team play with purpose and speed.

when it’s done properly, it’s not beaten by hoofball “any day” - quite the opposite, in fact, which has been illustrated countless times now in the english leagues, at world cups and wherever you want to look.

With all due respect we at least need to try and get someone in with experience of the task in hand.

PS I don't thin Robbo was a risk at all. Don't forget spent a year observing Ince Mk2 and learning the team and also what not to do.

And working with Allardyce, learning about management.

By a small handful of teams with hundreds of millions of pounds more than anyone else to collect the best players in the world that can play like that. Give me Leicester City “any day”.

We tried it with our League One budget. Without EFL’s equivalent of Iniesta, Hazard or De Bruyne we were neutralised, shut down. We had no alternative ability to take pressing opponents out of the game with balls over the top to direct wide men or to a sponge up front, or cross a ball past massed defenders. We didn’t even have a good striker in the air to get on the end of crosses if they arrived. All we had was trying to pass through them, with diminishing returns as more teams learned how to stop us.

Results matter, not style over substance.

results matter to you. other people have other preferences - like the team having an identity and principles. and we did go and get promoted playing robboball.

the idea that only rich teams can do it has been proven wrong repeatedly. nearly all the teams that have risen through the leagues rapidly - swansea, southampton, bournemouth, huddersfield - have committed themselves to a progressive style of play.

i don’t doubt that grayson would get us up the right end of league one. then what? we don’t have more money than the countless clubs in the championship and league one playing in a similar way to his teams, so how will we beat them? if the ceiling of our ambition is to be the next preston, what’s the point?

Only 2 teams in league 1 won last weekend with possession less than 505, one was 49% (hardly significant) and the other surprising was Wigan with 42%. The trouble with hoofball is that more than likely you are just giving the ball to the opposition and that is true in any league.

Latest Daily Mail article (2 hours ago) says Grayson is being "strongly linked"

I would be happy, he has a very good track record. What we need now is an experienced manager.

I knew you were a daily mail reader, I knew it

Ha ha !

You cannot beat Richard Littlejohn !

I see the leftie Richard Branson has reversed his decision to ban the Mail on his trains.....whether you like the Mail or not, the last thing we want is censorship. And the last thing we want is a nation of Guardian readers

Anyone who thinks Richard Branson is a leftie shouldn't be too worried about ending up with a nation of Guardian readers.
I'd keep on taking the pills if I were you mate.

1. As we are discussing style of play, you seem to be stating that playing a passing style makes us more "principled". Does that mean you think the big clubs in each country are more principled than the smaller clubs, and that the farther down the league you go the less principled they become as they play an ever decreasingly technical game and much more pragmatic?

no, i'm talking about setting out a specific way of doing something and sticking with it through bad times as well as good.

what those principles are can vary from case to case. luckily for me, our club has generally aligned with my personal ideals (progressive football and young, local talent given a chance).

however, that said...

2. You ask what's the point of becoming a team like Preston? Well, Preston are basically the same as most teams outside the biggest 10 or 20 in England? So you are basically dismissing most clubs in England, and most football clubs in general. What on earth would be unprincipled about doing what almost every other club does, trying to win games in a perfectly legal but slightly more pragmatic way?

...yes, i totally believe a large number of clubs in the football league are insular, lacking ambition and primarily interested in self-preservation. that's partly down to the way the football league is as a system and partly just a cultural thing in england. luckily, the fact that it has become readily apparent at the top level that a lot of other countries are much smarter than us is starting to trickle down the pyramid.
