I don't think he'd be a bad call actually should Neilson be sacked. He did well at Brentford, getting them promoted from league one and mid-table in the championship before opting to leave as he wasn't a fan of their statistical and analytical transfer style (seems to work for them). He did acceptable at Rangers but maybe the club and they're expectations were a bit too big for him. And he only did OK at best at Forest.
So the jury is out on him as a manager for me: his only real success was at a well-run club who were going well and when their manager opted to leave he was promoted from assistant and so already had everything in place and just continued that success. Going into Rangers and Forest needling to build success he has been less successful.
However, if he was prepared to drop back down to league one then I wouldn't think we could do much better. He's an experienced manager with a league one promotion under his belt.

Fleetwood have just signed Paddy Madden from Scunny. Can't help but feel it's the sort of player we should e going for, struggled this season but knows the league well and is a good player.
