I agree. As a midfielder, Potter got few assists and goals and wouldn’t show up on the Filthmeter.

Yes, but the Filthmeter is rarely that sophisticated.
Plus, and this is in general not Potter, there is retaining ball under pressure, headers won, dribbling, passing into dangerous areas (as opposed to nothing sideways passes)... there’s lots of things that make a good player and many of them are recorded by Opta or whatever.
But goals, and at a push assists, are all we tend to hear about in the media. In our matchday program the opposition player abilities are summed up just by appearances and goals, even the defenders.
