They had a number nine in their defence - what's that all about then?

Quite literally just mentioned this on another post. I asked a pompey fan why Hawkins was playing at the back, if my memory serves correctly he said he was a forward but is being 'converted'. So I guess it just means he can't score, the only upside they could think of regarding his place at the back was 'he wins everything in the air'.

It did puzzle me a bit when we found out he was a forward (thank you Google) why we weren't trying to get at him. He was never totally comfortable.

This is the most millennial thing ever to be put on this forum but who else but me:

I play FM a lot, I’m currently managing Pompey so to see my captain score the equaliser and my young gifted centre forward score against me irl hurt. Lol. But anyway, Hawkins is nearly 7 foot. He is a striker by nature but had been converted to centre half I believe (could be wrong) through injuries and filled in and done well. He’s a good striker. I’ve always wanted a striker that tall up top for us.

Remember Khalid Bouhlarouz? He was number 9 at right back for Chelsea.

Kenny Burns started off centre back, changed to becoming a striker at Birmingham and then went back to centre back under Nottingham Forest; while Chris Sutton was converted from a centre back to a striker.

Remember Colin Lee? Scored four goals on his debut for Spurs as a striker. Ended up as a centre back for Chelsea.
