I read somewhere that the contracts were for 2 and a bit years - in other words, the remainder of the season and then for the two following seasons. Makes perfectly good sense.

I understand what you mean about compensation, that's why this appointment had to be the right call. Can't keep sacking managers every 12 months.
But it would make no sense employing a young, inexperienced manager, ostensibly with the long term view in mind, but then only giving him an 18 months contract. If we were thinking short term we should have gone for someone more likely to hit the ground running and keep us up. Micciche's a long term appointment so I hope he has longer than an 18 months contract and is given all that time and more.
