You can pick as many pieces as you like, and by the same composer if you wish. However I'm going for a top 10, and I've limited myself to one piece per composer as I found it a bit easier making those tough calls about which to leave out...

Symphony no. 40 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Peer Gynt (Morning) - Edvard Grieg
Canon in D Major - Johann Pachelbel
Symphony no. 5 - Ludwig van Beethoven
Bolero - Maurice Ravel
Planets Suite (Mars & Jupiter) - Gustav Holst
Spring from Four Seasons - Antonio Vivaldi
Lieutenant Kije: Troika - Sergei Prokofiev
Serenade for Strings - Joseph Haydn
Symphony No.9 The New World - Antonin Dvorak

That leaves out so many other pieces that I love from those composers, and doesn't even include any from the likes of Tchaikovsky, Handel, Chopin, Bach, Elgar...

Being deaf and wearing a hearing aid I not have a very good ear for music, but I was very moved by the shuttle scene in 2001 backed by the Blue Danube. The pictures and the music seemed to be perfectly matched.

Got to be Beethoven's 5th symphony. Primarily because it is the only bit of classical music I can name.....

Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor.

It's become almost cliche in its use in media but as a piece in and on itself it's fucking sensationally chilling

Erik Satie - Gnossienne No.1

I'm not a huge classical buff (though I do love a bit of opera) but this is the greatest piece of music ever written. Better even than James Brown's Sex Machine.

(I'm not kidding).

Not really my thing unfortunately, but we used to have a Mozart album, sort of a greatest thing I guess. Brilliant. Used to play it on a Sunday morning. I'll have to try and dig it out. I really like The Flower Duet from Lakmé, but I'm guessing that's more opera than classical.

Yeah, Gers, one of the first classical albums I remember loving was a Mozart Best of. And Opera is a part of Classical Music as well, though I'm not really as fond of the singing part of Classical Music and much prefer things like Symphonies, Waltzes, Concertos, etc.

I was introduced to classical music early but drifted away from it as I got much more into other genres, like Rock. However I've got right back into it again in recent years, more than I've ever been.

Good shout, Keyser.
I prefer his Gymnopédie No. 1, but both are great pieces of work.

I think watching more films over the last couple of years has really increased my returning love of classical music. Hearing so many snippets of pieces that I love but had mostly neglected over the years in favour of other genres. I've returned to them and I guess they just feel 'right' for where I am, mentally, nowadays.

I'm in my mid 40's but kind of feel 'old', and sitting back in solitude listening to restful, haunting pieces of classical music just 'feels' right for my mood. That's not to say you have to be a miserable old depressive like me to enjoy classical music - there's plenty of loud, stirring pieces that are just as wonderful. :)
