Legendary dub producer, and all 'round wonderful headcase, Lee Scratch Perry has sadly passed away.

Most know him for the hits, Police And Thieves, that sort of thing, but The Heart Of The Congos, by The Congos is a fantastic album.

I'd actually thought he'd died years ago! Mad as a badger but a bona fide genius.

King Tubby Meets the Upsetter At the Grass Roots of Dub is a good place to start, if you like mad 70s dub (and, let's face it, if you don't then you're an eejit).

And, as Gers mentioned, he co-wrote and produced Police and Thieves with Junior Murvin, which is about a zillion times better than the Clash's lame cover.

If you're looking for a way in, I'd highly recommend a wonderful box set called 'Arkology'. It spans his whole career up to the early 90's. By the time you get to disk 4 or 5, you'd better be prepared for about 6 versions of the aforementioned Police And Thieves, but that apart it's a truly must have investment.

And at the height of punk, he produced 'Complete Control'.

It's also well worth your time reading some of the stories about him. A fair few are 'what the fuck!' daft. Like the time he thought Chris Blackwell was the devil and sacrificed a chicken to keep him away from his studio. A studio that he subsequently burnt to the ground. Mad as a box of frogs.

He certainly did - Chr*st knows how the mental state he was in. One of the great tracks from that era. (Awesome live)
