Bassist Herbie Flowers has passed away at the age of 86.

I'm assuming that most on here won't have heard of him, but I'd be amazed if everyone on here doesn't own at least one recording that he played on. He played on tracks by Bowie, T Rex, Lou Reed,David Essex, Justin Hayward, Steve Harley, Donovan, Alvin Stardust, Captain Sensible and Annie Haslam amongst many, many others.

He's obviously best known for the iconic bass line on Reed's Walk On The Wild Side, for which he received the princely sum of £12, but what I didn't know until this morning that as a bet he wrote Grandad for Clive Dunn.

He was an amazing player, and here's his best work in my opinion.

He met Clive Dunn at a party, and when Dunn found out who he was, and more importantly, what he'd played on, he bet him that he couldn't write something for him.

He was also part of the classic trained supergroup Sky who had a couple of surprise hits in the eighties.

Toccata from Sky2 was the one I remember the most.
