Gary Numan. Roadmenders, Northampton, Tue 1st Oct.

Now, before we start, I don't like Gary Fucking Numan. But the current Mrs Gers liked his last album. So there we are. I last saw him 40 years ago. So if my arithmetic is trustworthy, I'll be 97 when I have to see him again.

So taking the previous paragraph into account, that was a great gig. And do you know why? Because it was a proper show. Video screens, fantastic light show, he was obviously having a ball, and so were the crowd.

I like wilfully shit music. Stuff that's difficult to listen to. Stuff that you have to make an effort with. Christ almighty, the last thing I bought was some polish hiphop. So when folk tell me that the music I listen to is shit, I can't really argue.

It was a great gig, because like I've already alluded to, he made an effort. The last couple of times I've seen The Mary Chain you couldn't actually see them. Spiritualised! Jason Pierce comes on, sits on a chair, mumbles into a mic for an hour and a half. We saw Blancmange earlier this year and all he did was complain all evening. I've seen Sleaford Mods countless times. One guy shouting. One guy drinking and nodding his head. All of the above were right up my street. I loved every single minute of it. But sometimes all you require is a fucking good show.

I recognised 4 songs, and as soon as he'd played 'Are Friends Electric' we were off. But it certainly was a good night. Made all the better because his stuff has actions, which the crowd duly participated in brilliantly.

See you in 2059.

Recently booked for Jake Bugg at Rock City next March, the first gig tickets I have bought in a year

The whole thing feels bonkers at the moment. Whilst I was delighted to get to those two games at S:MK before Christmas I have no idea what it will feel like to be in a sweaty, enclosed venue like Rock City or the others that await

With another four or five pre-COVID booked gigs in venues of all sizes out there still waiting to come round the whole thing feels really weird. Whilst I have absolutely got my head around going to the game I must admit I'm still at sea on the gig front

Your kidding Ali - after the events of the last 48 hours all I'm after is a return to some normality!

Genesis at the indoor arena in Birmingham last Monday

Whilst I knew Phil Collins is in poor health, it was quite shocking to see him in such a state. That said, he remains ever the master showman and orchestrated the evening with all of the old swagger and sparkle, even if it was from a chair. Given Phil's health though this will definitely be the last tour, so it made for a poignant evening

I hadn't expected it but was overjoyed that around half of the material was from the Peter Gabriel era - there were things I hadn't expected to hear again as well as the more commercial 80s material. Add to this a few stripped back re-workings of a handful of numbers, and the whole set list was extremely satisfying

An end of an a era

Just got in the door from Courteeners at Old Trafford cricket ground.

Did the exact same a few years ago and it was fun. But a ballache but nevertheless it was fun.
This one was fun, but an absolute shitshow in terms of organisation. I didn't have any trouble personally but the majority did from what I hear.
Its not a great venue for 50k drunk people, majority of which are football fans too so are tanked up way before the gig started.

I love that band and have seen them many times. Johnny Marr supported as did Blossoms. They were great too. But just don't see OT as a great venue for a concert.

OK, not quite a gig but we went to see Rock of Ages at the MK Theatre last night

A returning favourite - rib-ticklingly funny, saucy and razor sharp stuff chock full of banging 80s rock classics. Whilst the theatre wasn't full by a long way the audience were well up for it, ensuring a boisterous evening - at least by the end!
