Genesis at the indoor arena in Birmingham last Monday
Whilst I knew Phil Collins is in poor health, it was quite shocking to see him in such a state. That said, he remains ever the master showman and orchestrated the evening with all of the old swagger and sparkle, even if it was from a chair. Given Phil's health though this will definitely be the last tour, so it made for a poignant evening
I hadn't expected it but was overjoyed that around half of the material was from the Peter Gabriel era - there were things I hadn't expected to hear again as well as the more commercial 80s material. Add to this a few stripped back re-workings of a handful of numbers, and the whole set list was extremely satisfying
An end of an a era
Yes I was stunned to see one gig open with The Cinema Show which is awesome. I don't like the 80s stuff at all but it was a decent run through of the stuff I DO enjoy. Tony now has ditched his banks (no, no I didn't engineer that one honestly) of keyboards a la 1977 and seems to be using 2! Phil's kid on drums did a very workmanlike job and Steurmer (as ever) tries hard to be Hackett (and if you closed your eyes) manages it once in a while. But this surely is 'it'.
Steve Hackett's tour should be good.
