Having just won his 20th Grand Slam title today, Federer must be out in front in terms of the best male tennis player ever...but who is the best in other sports (cricket, rugby, football etc)?

Undoubtably the best ever. Not my favourite but the best.

Got to be Cruyff for influence on and off the field.

Ali - won the world crown three times and was (possibly) a bigger cultural and political icon than any other sports star.

I think my vote would probably go to Pelé.

Probably Ali for those reasons, plus he single-handedly resurrected interest in heavyweight boxing in the sixties.

He had a unique and exciting style for a heavyweight then, but when he slowed down in the seventies he was able to adapt and change it completely and still win two further world titles. Not many sportsman could do that, especially in that sport.

Michael Phelps.

The most successful Olympic athlete of all time.
He won multiple Olympic gold medals in individual events, and team events, from 100m through to 400m distances.
At four different Olympic games, from 2004-2016.

Phelps is the all-time record holder for both Olympic gold medals (23), and Olympic gold medals in individual events (13).

Phelps broke Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at any single Olympic Games which had stood since 1972, when he won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games.

I don't even like swimming.

For me, Ed Moses is a hero - he won 122 consecutive races (107 of them were finals, not heats) and set the world record in the 400m hurdles four times, while remaining unbeaten for 10 years in his individual specialist event.

Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny, and Laura Kenny, are track cycling legends in both individual & team events.

Phil Taylor is simply the best at darts.

But in a real sport, at multiple disciplines, in individual and team events, Michael Phelps is way ahead of anyone else.
Simply the best.
Ever.
