India losing the Cricket World Cup final today, having already beaten every other team in the tournament (and New Zealand twice), and having home advantage. It's got to be up there. It is also probably the funniest choke in sport, due to so many India fans spending the last six weeks giving it the big'un.

Any others?

Jean Van De Velde in the 1999 Open at Carnoustie. He needed double bogey to win and made a treble and ended up losing in the play off.

1985 Snooker world championship final. Steve Davis leading 7-0 at the end of the first session, then won the first frame of the second session to make it 8-0, but ultimately losing 17-18 to Dennis Taylor. Even on the final black he missed a good chance - by no means not a certainty for most but one that the world number 1 would be expected to pot

You could arguably say Lewis Hamilton in 2007. With two races to go and 20 points on the table, he was 12 ahead of Alonso and 17 ahead of Raikkonen. Kimi won the title by a point and he tied with Fernando. Binning it in the pitlane entry in China was the big blow.

Having said that, it was a monumental achievement to be so close to winning the championship in his first year (and I say that as someone who can't stand the guy).

2012 PDC world darts championship semi final. First to 6 sets, James Wade led Adrian Lewis 5-0 when Lewis complained of a breeze blowing across the stage affecting his throw. James Wade agreed to go off stage while it was resolved. When the match resumed Adrian Lewis won the 6 remaining sets to go through to the final, and second world title.

Also in darts, most players after beating Phil Taylor in the world championship (on the few occasions it happened) went on to lose their next game - Wayne Mardle (beaten next game by Kirk Shepherd), Mark Webster (beaten next game by Adrian Lewis), Dave Chisnall (beaten next game by Andy Hamilton), Michael Smith (beaten next game by Peter Wright), van Barneveld (beaten next game to van Gerwen). The only exception was Jelle Klaasen who got through his next match before being well beaten the round after, and anyone who beat him in the final
