Messi is the best ever. But that is a bit ridiculous.

I think for a number of years the outcome has been a nonsense
2019 - Messing winning ahead of Van Dijk
2020 - Lewandowski not getting one due to 'Covid' despite football still being played
2021 - Messi winning
Then add Salah and De Bruyne who have arguably been the most talented players in Europe for a number of years barely getting a sniff

I heard a clip from Simon Jordan, which I've got to agree with, some form of special life time achievement or some unique award should have been given to Messi for winning the World Cup and essentially finishing his career in Europe. But this time I don't think Messi deserved the award which is meant for the 'player deemed to have performed the best over the previous year'.

Messi deserves all the praise and awards for his career, but not this one. But I was convinced it would happen the moment he won the World Cup

Messi stunk for an entire season at PSG. Maybe two. He was superb in the World Cup - that's why he won player of the tournament. If we're giving him the golden ball too, we may as well not have it in a World Cup year.

Haaland unquestionably deserved it. Goals. Trophies. Debut campaign. Winning games on his own... its not his fault he's Norwegian and not Argentine or Brazillian.

Messi received 30% more points than Haaland for the award. There are 8 nations that have won the WC, including England. The votes are out as to how their reps voted. It is a reasonable assumption that they understand who deserves the award pretty well. 7 voted for Messi. The only one that didn’t was, yep, you guessed it, France.
