Problem: football player develops gambling hobby because he only works a couple of hours a day during the week and gets bored.

Solution: ban him from playing football so he has nothing at all to do for months on end and gets even more bored than he was.

You have to wonder why he gambled on football? He could have gambled on horses, golf, cricket etc and it would have been fine but betting on your own sport is banned due to the impact it has on the sports integrity.

He was having a bet, he wasn't match fixing.
He plays for Brentford, who are owned by someone who also owns a gambling company.
His shirt has a gambling company on the front.
Brentford's ground is bedecked with advertising for gambling.
He's received a longer ban for gambling than others have for racism.

I've never placed a bet in all of my six decades on this planet, so I'm probably not the best person to comment on this, but the sheer hypocrisy surrounding this is astonishing.

Looks like he was betting on his team to lose. That’s pretty serious.

It's serious, of course, but they were all games which he didn't feature in. Gers is right, the problem of gambling in football is massive. It's not just this specific Toney situation that needs to be sorted, it's a issue within the whole sport that needs to be addressed - and quickly.

It will be interesting to see Brentfords views and behaviour going forward considering they promote a betting company on their shirts.

Clearly he has a problem with addiction and needs some help with that. I’ve recently read Paul Merson’s book and he fell into some pretty dark places.

However, I don’t think the fact that he’s got problems mean that he shouldn’t get the appropriate penalty. An alcoholic caught drunk driving doesn’t get a lesser penalty.
