Gary Lineker owes nearly £5million in unpaid income tax to HMRC, who have been pursuing him for it for at least a couple of years now.

They argue that he is in effect a BBC employee rather than an independent contractor (even though he still does some work for BT Sport, as far as I'm aware).

Nonetheless, openly rebelling against BBC policy does a very good job of making him look more independent than a normal employee would.

Whether that's the real motivation behind all this or not, I'm not sure, but it certainly won't be doing him any harm in that regard.
