Those of us who remember him in his prime will find this very sad.

Jeez...

I like to remember him in his prime, being door-stepped by the press when his marriage was in trouble, volleying the ball at the hapless journos with unfailing accuracy.

Frankly, if he hadn't been one of the most talented footballers ever, he'd have probably still ended up as an alcoholic scaffolder/builder/bin man/ whatever. Flawed (who isn't?) but very, very human.

A maverick to me is a player who doesn’t conform to the accepted pratices of the day and plays how they want so I would suggest Matt Le Tissier is a great example - goalkeepers are a rich source Higuita, Grobberlaar, Chilavert.

Higuita! They changed the rules of the game because of him.

"only after people saw Rene Higuita play that way that the rules were changed...I achieved something even Pele, Maradona and Messi haven't"

(yes he is speaking in the third person).

I guess someone like Eric Cantona would fit into this. So talented, but what was he doing launching himself into the Crystal Palace crowd? Retired too soon as well

I immediately thought of Frank Worthington & Stan Bowles when I saw this thread & both have already been cited as possible 'mavericks'.

In terms of a later generation, I did wonder about Stan Collymore for maverick status but the more I think about it, the more I'd put him in the category of a wasted talent due to being a bit of a dick.
