To win you have to score goals and also stop the opposition scoring goals. Controlling the football is a good way (not the only way) of doing that

So how do you score by only passing sideways and backwards?

You don't only pass backwards and sideways. You probe for opportunities in a patient way. Hopefully, eventually they come. At the same time, they can't score.

Really good game. Lots of skill. Foden looks a real player (although Brewster will, probably rightly, get all the plaudits).

I'm assuming our Old Boy Dan Micciche will have coached some of these guys at U-16. If so, he should feel very proud.
Fear not, they will soon have it knocked out of em and learn how to pass two yards sideways and backwards. Slow, slow, slower, slower, slow.
Better than hoofing it blindly forwards.

It’s not blindly if you have someone up there who can win it and keep play going, which we have now. It’s a valid option. It makes teams think twice about the high press, and if they don’t it bypasses all the pressers.

We tried just passing the ball about for Robbo’s last 18 months, throughout which it had been sussed by all opposition and became a net disaster.

I get the sentiments of d50 but no team that invited pressure by playing negative football ever does well. Its not enough to just keep the ball, you have to put forward pressure on teams and make that possession count.

That's a given. But you can't make it count if you haven't got it.

And that's the bit you ignore, delibrately (or mischievously) in your debates with other posters, a la the one in this thread. You surely realise they are despairing at the sideways-backwards style, with no ability to press that posession home? They are not complaining about Pep's superstars but about L1 cloggers taking that style and doing it badly.

But you know that and just do it to wind them up, don't you?
